Summary
Shantanu, an officer of the Central Bureau of Investigation, is assigned to examine the circumstances surrounding an aircraft crash in a remote region of West Bengal. At the same time, national news reports announce that a militant organisation , responsible for severe harm and loss of life , has hijacked a passenger plane carrying several dignitaries. On this basis, investigators initially assume that the wreckage belongs to the hijacked aircraft.
Working alongside his colleague Gaurango, Shantanu soon discovers that the crashed aircraft is not the hijacked plane but Flight JL50, a commercial airliner that disappeared thirty‑five years earlier. Forensic analysis, structural degradation, and surviving documentation all indicate that the aircraft is genuinely of that age. Despite this, Shantanu suspects that the circumstances have been deliberately engineered, and that the apparent age of the aircraft may be part of a larger deception.
During the crash, the cockpit separated from the fuselage and came down in a different location, resulting in two survivors; all remaining passengers perished. This anomaly further deepens the investigation, raising questions about the aircraft’s disappearance, its sudden reappearance, and the events leading to its destruction.
Shantanu’s investigation leads him to Professor Mitra, whose academic work and documented ideological leanings , particularly his engagement with communist thought , begin to intersect with the emerging anomalies surrounding Flight JL50. A visit to Mitra’s residence reveals technical drawings and schematic plans for aircraft design among his old files, suggesting a long‑standing preoccupation with aviation and experimental research.
Through consultation with a university scholar, Shantanu learns that Mitra had been involved in an initiative known as Project A, a research endeavour rooted in a much older historical narrative. According to this account, Emperor Ashoka, profoundly affected by the devastation of the Kalinga War, embraced non‑violence and articulated his philosophy as Dhamma‑Vijaya. In an effort to prevent future misuse of knowledge he deemed dangerous, Ashoka is said to have collected and concealed advanced scientific and technological concepts. Among these was a theoretical framework for time travel, a subject on which Mitra’s father had reportedly conducted research during the late British colonial period.
Following India’s independence, funding for such speculative research diminished, yet Mitra continued his father’s work, preserving and expanding the underlying theories. Shantanu subsequently uncovers information linking Subroto Das to Mitra as his assistant and trusted collaborator, further deepening the investigative trail that connects the crash of JL50 to long‑buried scientific ambitions and historical legend.
