Summary
Set at the beginning of the 19th century, starting in 1801, the series takes place on the fictional French‑controlled island of Pulau‑Pulau in the East Indies. The protagonist, Jack Stiles, is an American secret agent dispatched by President Jefferson to monitor French activity and counter threats posed by Napoleon’s expansionist ambitions.
Upon arrival, Jack meets his British liaison, Emilia Rothschild, an English spy who becomes both his professional partner and romantic interest. Publicly, Jack serves as Emilia’s attaché, though she occasionally assumes the role for him, while covertly adopting the persona of a legendary masked vigilante known as the Daring Dragoon to conceal his identity during missions against America’s enemies.
The series is characterised by recurring comedic devices, including deliberate historical inaccuracies, such as portraying Canada as a French territory rather than part of the British Empire, or depicting Benjamin Franklin on the hundred‑dollar bill during his lifetime.
Another ongoing gag involves Jack being responsible for numerous pivotal historical events without ever receiving recognition. Emilia frequently produces improbable inventions that function as overt deus ex machina solutions, while the narrative incorporates sexual innuendo and highlights the persistent romantic tension between Jack and Emilia.
