Summary
Jake Foley is a computer technician employed by the NSA who privately aspires to serve as a field operative. His circumstances change abruptly when he is assigned to a top‑secret research facility and becomes caught in an armed confrontation between security personnel and a saboteur. During the incident, an experimental vial ruptures, exposing Foley to shrapnel infused with nanomites, microscopic machines designed to repair biological damage and modify human physiology.
The nanomites rapidly heal Foley’s injuries and restructure his body, granting him a suite of enhanced capabilities. These include superhuman strength, accelerated speed, heightened auditory and visual acuity, and the capacity to interface telepathically with computer systems. Recognizing the strategic value of these abilities, the NSA designates Foley as an emerging but untested asset and establishes a specialised operations unit built around his unique capabilities.
As Foley transitions into active field duty and achieves the role he long sought, he is confronted with complications in his personal life. His former romantic interest, Sarah Heywood, returns as part of a Congressional inquiry whose findings threaten to reveal the existence of his classified activities.
