Summary
Joe is portrayed as an ordinary, adventure‑seeking schoolboy who has been adopted by Professor Ian McClaine, a distinguished electronics engineer and creator of the BIG RAT , the Brain Impulse Galvanoscope Record And Transfer system. This device is capable of recording the neural patterns of one individual and transferring them to another, effectively granting the recipient the specialised skills and knowledge of the donor.
At the request of Shane Weston, Deputy Head of the World Intelligence Network (WIN), McClaine employs the BIG RAT on Joe, enabling him to acquire the abilities of highly trained adults. This makes Joe WIN’s “Most Special Agent,” uniquely suited to undertake missions in situations where an adult operative could not plausibly infiltrate or escape.
Before each assignment, Joe undergoes the BIG RAT process: seated in a rising chair that locks into a rotating cage, he is subjected to the playback of the recorded brain patterns amid electronic sound effects and a vivid, psychedelic light display. After the transfer, he activates the implanted knowledge by wearing his electrode glasses. Over the course of the series, Joe assumes the roles of astronaut, test pilot, racing driver, aquanaut, computer expert, brain surgeon, and numerous other specialists.
Joe carries a seemingly ordinary school satchel, which conceals a range of covert equipment. When inverted and opened via two concealed studs, the case reveals compartments containing his electrode glasses, WIN identification badge, pistol, pocket transmitter, ammunition, and classified mission documents. This combination of everyday disguise and advanced technology underscores Joe’s dual identity as both schoolboy and elite operative.
