Summary
The series originated on DTN as a live‑broadcast production featuring Vaughn Taylor in the role of Ernest, a janitor employed at a television studio with a penchant for experimenting with its equipment. During one such after‑hours session, Ernest inadvertently established contact with Johnny Jupiter and the robot B‑12 on the planet Jupiter. The communication device, a notably large television screen, even by contemporary standards, was designed to accommodate the puppeteers positioned behind it.
Ernest’s unexpected interplanetary correspondence quickly made him a celebrated television figure on Jupiter, where broadcasting served as a disciplinary measure for children who devoted excessive time to academic pursuits. The DTN episodes, aimed at both juvenile and adult audiences, offered a satirical portrayal of terrestrial life as interpreted by the Jovians, blending humour with social commentary.
Note: The Show first aired on the DuMont Television Network (DTN) for it's first season and then moved to the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) for it's second session.
