Summary
Dan Vasser, an ordinary San Francisco journalist, unexpectedly begins to travel back in time, with no apparent trigger and no ability to control when or where these temporal displacements occur. Over time, he discovers that each shift is connected to the life of a specific individual whose future he is seemingly tasked with altering, though the outcomes of his interventions are not always beneficial. During these journeys he encounters Livia Beale, his former fiancée, long presumed dead after a mysterious plane crash. Possessing knowledge of events yet to occur, Dan becomes increasingly preoccupied with whether he can save her and what consequences such an act might have for his own present‑day life.
Dan’s temporal “shifts” occur without warning, marked only by a brief visual distortion that is often so subtle he fails to notice it. His destination may be any point in the recent past, typically requiring him to orient himself by locating a contemporary newspaper. Although he usually arrives somewhere within the same city, the specific location can vary dramatically. Each time he jumps, his body and personal belongings vanish from the present, while time continues to pass normally for those around him, sometimes at a rate that does not align with his subjective experience in the past. This discrepancy leads to significant strain with his family and colleagues, who struggle to understand his unexplained absences, which can last hours or even days. On occasion, Dan encounters his younger self, further complicating his efforts to navigate the rules of his condition.
