Summary
Set in the aftermath of the 1929 stock‑market crash, former businessman Sheldon Sampson embarks on an expedition to an uncharted island in the Atlantic Ocean following his father’s suicide. There, Sampson, his brother Walter, and four companions acquire superhuman abilities. On returning, Sampson establishes the Union of Justice, a superhero organisation governed by his unwavering principles: never take a life and never intervene in political affairs. These ideals remain central to his nearly century‑long career as the Utopian.
The succeeding generation of heroes, including Sampson’s own children, finds it increasingly difficult to uphold his strict moral code. Tensions escalate when his son, Brandon, appears to kill one of their most formidable adversaries in order to save Sampson’s life. The incident provokes widespread public debate over whether the Utopian’s long‑standing ideals retain their relevance in a changing world.
