Summary
Set one year after the onset of the Katla volcano’s eruption, the series depicts the near‑abandoned town of Vík, where a small number of residents remain despite the persistent fall of volcanic ash. The community is unsettled when a woman who vanished two decades earlier emerges from the ash fields, appearing exactly as she did at the time of her disappearance. Additional ash‑covered figures soon arrive—individuals long deceased, creating profound emotional and existential dilemmas for those who once knew them and reviving local folklore concerning “changelings.”
Concurrently, a volcanologist from Reykjavík uncovers the remnants of a meteorite embedded within the glacier, a discovery that coincides with the inexplicable return of his dead son. As the inhabitants of Vík confront these manifestations, their encounters with the so‑called changelings compel them to address unresolved traumas and long‑buried conflicts from their pasts.
