Summary
A schoolboy, Styopa, is sent by his parents to spend the summer with his grandmother in a rural village, intended as a disciplinary measure. Removed from the conveniences of modern technology, he is required to adapt to the traditional rhythms and customs of village life. While attempting to evade a group of local youths, Styopa hides in a well and accidentally falls into it. Upon emerging, he discovers that he has been transported to a Cossack settlement of the 17th century, at a pivotal moment in national history.
By circumstance, Styopa becomes acquainted with his distant ancestors, gains genuine companions, and acquires practical knowledge of historical events that he had previously failed to grasp in school. His experiences in the past ultimately provide him with a deeper understanding of the era and its significance.
