Summary
Anna Macy, who left the Tasmanian town of Kettering at the age of fourteen, returns fifteen years after the unexplained disappearance of her best friend and paternal half‑sister, Gillian Baxter. The two girls had been cycling through the prohibited forests outside Kettering when they witnessed unusual lights in the sky. Eight hours later, Anna was discovered alone, traumatised, and covered in blood, with no memory of Gillian’s fate.
Upon her return, Anna finds Kettering economically and socially strained. The surrounding forests have been designated for logging, fuelling conflict between environmental activists and local timber workers. Her reappearance unsettles the community further when another young woman, Chloe Holloway, vanishes under mysterious circumstances. As Anna becomes drawn into the investigation, she is compelled to confront the events of the night Gillian disappeared, uncovering long‑buried secrets that threaten the town’s already precarious future.
