Summary
The central figure of this seven‑part narrative is Des Kinvig, an ineffectual and mildly eccentric dreamer who operates a small backstreet electrical‑repair shop. His domestic life is defined by the attentions of his fussy, maternal wife Netta and the constant presence of Cuddley, an oversized and placid dog. Kinvig’s principal diversion from his otherwise monotonous routine is the company of his friend Jim, an enthusiastic believer in extraterrestrial phenomena and a committed UFO devotee.
During a late‑night walk with Cuddley, Kinvig’s habitual flights of fancy appear to materialise when he encounters a landed spacecraft. He further discovers that one of his regular customers, the domineering Miss Griffin, is in fact a humanoid visitor from Mercury, portrayed by Prunella Gee in a succession of striking futuristic costumes. Griffin transports Kinvig to Mercury, where he is introduced to Buddo, a 500‑year‑old figure of authority.
On Mercury, Kinvig learns of an imminent threat to Earth posed by the Xux, an ant‑like species engaged in a covert campaign of infiltration. Their strategy involves replacing human beings with robotic facsimiles and distributing a mysterious ability to bend metal cutlery, a phenomenon intended to destabilise terrestrial society.
