Summary

The television adaptation diverges from the film versions in a central narrative respect: Nikita (Peta Wilson) is portrayed as innocent. She is neither a murderer nor a drug user, but a homeless young woman caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Section One, an elite, clandestine counter‑terrorism organisation, frames her for the killing of a police officer, resulting in a life sentence and a staged prison suicide that enables the organisation to recruit her. Under threat of being killed, or “cancelled,” should she fail to comply, Nikita is compelled to execute Section One’s uncompromising methods while struggling to preserve her moral integrity. This internal conflict forms the thematic core of the series.

A pivotal scene in both theatrical films involves Nikita’s first assignment: the assassination of a VIP in a crowded restaurant. While the film incarnations of the character complete the mission, the television version avoids killing the target, despite later becoming, by necessity, a highly capable operative. Throughout the series, and despite the manipulations of those in power, Nikita retains her compassion and humanity.

Over time, her covert and precarious romantic relationship with her trainer, the enigmatic Michael Samuelle (Roy Dupuis), becomes a major source of dramatic tension and the show’s most significant interpersonal dynamic. Near the end of the series, Nikita finally uncovers the truth behind her recruitment into Section One.
