Summary
Following the commercial success of Black Box, the (1915), Universal produced a further scientific‑detective serial featuring Asher in the role of Duck, an inventor‑detective distinguished by his ability to outwit the criminal mastermind Lady Baffles (Peacock), a charismatic and resourceful female crook. The serial centres on Duck’s reliance on unconventional scientific devices to escape perilous situations and resolve investigations. Among his notable inventions are the rubberscope, a viewing apparatus comparable to a closed‑circuit television system, and the smellograph, a chemical instrument capable of emitting a gas‑like substance through solid walls to incapacitate adversaries.
