Summary
In late 2020, nearly a year after a lethal virus devastates the global population, Phil Miller believes himself to be the final surviving human within the United States. Travelling across the country, he leaves messages in every state indicating that he is alive and residing in Tucson, Arizona, yet his search yields no other survivors. After years of isolation, Phil prepares to end his life, but moments before doing so he notices smoke in the distance and encounters Carol Pilbasian, another survivor. Although frequently exasperated by one another, Carol insists that, as the last known humans, they have a responsibility to repopulate the species and should marry to preserve social convention. Phil reluctantly agrees, and the pair establish a tenuous partnership.
Over time, additional survivors, Melissa, Todd, Erica, Gail, and another man also named Phil Miller, arrive in Tucson, forming a small community. Phil’s abrasive behaviour eventually results in his expulsion from the group, prompting Carol to leave with him.
By mid‑2023, Phil and Carol continue travelling and discover that the group has relocated to Malibu, California. They return to re‑establish trust. Concurrently, Phil’s brother, Mike Miller, an astronaut who survived in orbit, crash‑lands on Earth and joins the group briefly before falling ill. Believing him infected, most members ostracize him.
Following a dangerous encounter with the paranoid survivor Pat Brown, the group relocates to a self‑sustaining office complex in San Jose, California. There, Melissa experiences severe psychological distress, and Carol discovers a young boy living alone in the nearby woods, whom the group names Jasper. As time progresses, Erica gives birth to a daughter, Dawn, and the group decides to leave the United States for Mexico after witnessing a nuclear facility meltdown near their compound.
