Summary
While operating off the coast of Pakistan, the Colorado retrieves a U.S. Navy SEAL team. Shortly thereafter, the submarine receives an unexpected directive ordering the launch of nuclear ballistic missiles against Pakistan. The order arrives through a legacy Cold War emergency channel, intended for use only if Washington, D.C. has already been destroyed.
Captain Marcus Chaplin (Andre Braugher) demands formal verification, noting that the capital remains intact. His refusal to execute the launch without proper authentication leads to his removal from command by Deputy Secretary of Defense William Curry (Jay Karnes). Executive Officer Lieutenant Commander Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman) is installed as acting captain. Kendal likewise questions the order, prompting the Virginia‑class attack submarine USS Illinois (SSN‑786) to fire upon the Colorado. Although other U.S. submarines carry out nuclear strikes on Pakistan, the Colorado survives the attack.
Declared fugitives, Chaplin and his crew seek refuge on Sainte Marina, a fictional French island in the Indian Ocean, where they seize control of a NATO communications and early‑warning facility. When two B‑1 Lancer bombers are dispatched to destroy the submarine, Chaplin launches a Trident missile toward Washington, D.C., altering its final coordinates so that it overflies the city and detonates harmlessly over the Atlantic Ocean. The detonation, visible from Washington and New York, serves as a demonstration of intent. Chaplin subsequently announces a 200‑mile exclusion zone around Sainte Marina.
The crew must now uncover the origins of the false launch order and identify the U.S. officials responsible for framing them, all while attempting to restore their honour and return home.
