Summary
Pratt is an 1876 dime‑novel author whose declining series about the fictional Western hero Nicodemus Legend forces him to undertake public appearances in character, owing to Legend’s use of Pratt’s likeness. A warrant issued for Legend in Sheridan, Colorado, prompts Pratt, who has never visited the state, to investigate.
There he encounters Janos Bartok, an immigrant scientist whose experimental devices, including river‑diversion machinery and various mechanical and electrical inventions, inadvertently created the impression of Legend’s involvement. Pratt assists Bartok in thwarting a fraudulent land scheme and, at Bartok’s urging, adopts the Legend persona permanently, relocating to Colorado and attempting to emulate the hero’s exploits despite lacking the temperament or skills associated with the role.
