Summary
David Haller, diagnosed with schizophrenia in early adolescence, spent much of his life as a patient in a succession of psychiatric institutions. His most recent commitment was arranged by his adoptive sister, Amy Haller. During his confinement, Haller formed a connection with fellow patient Syd Barrett, an encounter that prompted him to question whether his experiences stemmed solely from mental illness. A subsequent incident resulted in the death of his friend Lenore “Lenny” Busker, drawing the attention of the government agency Division 3. Pursued by its operatives, Haller was rescued by Syd and a group of mutants based at Summerland, who revealed that he was a powerful psychic mutant. Haller later learned that his mind had been compromised by a parasitic entity: the psychic mutant Amahl Farouk, also known as the Shadow King. His early arc centres on his struggle to expel Farouk from his consciousness.
At the outset of the second season, Haller reappears after spending a year trapped within a mysterious orb. During his absence, the Summerland group has aligned with Division 3 in an effort to prevent Farouk from locating his original body and reclaiming his full power. Farouk manipulates Oliver Bird and employs a stolen Division 3 device to engineer the rebirth of Lenny Busker, now inhabiting the body of Amy Haller.
In the third season, evidence provided by the Shadow King leads Division 3 to turn against Haller, prompting him to flee with Lenny and establish a cult‑like refuge. Haller recruits Switch, a time‑traveling mutant, intending to enhance her abilities to avert future catastrophe. He abducts Cary Loudermilk to assist in amplifying Switch’s powers, enabling him to revisit his childhood and witness key moments in his parents’ lives. These include his father Charles Xavier serving in wartime, meeting Gabrielle Haller in a mental health facility, confronting Farouk, and the circumstances under which Farouk first infiltrated David’s mind. Haller’s attempts to alter the past provoke conflict with the Time Eaters, extra‑dimensional beings who threaten the integrity of time itself in response to his interventions.
