Summary
In the late 2040s, Aryavarta is governed by Dr. Joshi, whose administration enforces strict segregation across walled communities amid severe environmental decline. Shalini, her husband Rizwan Chaudhary, and their daughter Leila live quietly until enforcers attack the family for alleged water misuse, killing Rizwan and abducting Shalini.
Shalini is placed in a state‑run re‑education centre for women deemed impure, where inmates are drugged, subjected to forced labour, and periodically selected for a purity test that determines release or transfer to a labour camp. She learns of a new law mandating the seizure of children of mixed parentage, placing Leila at risk due to Rizwan’s Muslim identity.
The policy is demonstrated when Kanika’s infant is declared impure and taken by authorities, leading to punitive measures against both Kanika and Shalini. Seeking escape, Shalini betrays fellow detainees Pooja and Dr. Renu to gain access to the purity test, but refuses to execute them during the procedure and is consequently sentenced to a labour camp.
During transport, civil unrest over water scarcity overturns the bus, enabling Shalini to flee. Her escape is pursued by the guard Bhanu.
