Summary

The fictional cosmology is divided into two distinct realms: the Light Universe and the Dark Universe. The Light Universe is governed by the entity known as His Shadow, whose regime oversees the creation of the Lexx, an immense, partially organic starship regarded as the most powerful vessel ever constructed. Its bio‑engineered design requires human biological components, a practice that provokes moral outrage among dissident groups. A rebel faction attempts to steal the Lexx to prevent its completion, but the operation collapses when Kai, an undead assassin incapable of being killed, eliminates the insurgents. Through a series of unintended events, Stanley Tweedle, a disgraced former security guard, and Zev, a genetically conditioned love slave, gain access to the Lexx. Kai, upon recovering fragments of his former identity, renounces His Shadow and joins the fugitives in their escape.

Kai is the last surviving member of the Brunnen‑G, a civilisation devoted to resisting His Shadow and the insect civilisation he represents. Although Kai’s body is sustained by proto‑plasm, a substance supplied only by His Shadow’s bio‑systems, the crew flees into the Dark Zone, a region where His Shadow’s influence does not extend. Their journey becomes a search both for refuge and for a means to preserve Kai’s deteriorating form.

At the outset of the main narrative arc, remnants of the Giga Shadow, the ultimate manifestation of His Shadow, persist within Kai without his awareness. These remnants manipulate Kai into urging the Lexx crew to seek additional proto‑blood, the vital essence required to maintain his undead state. This quest is revealed to be a stratagem intended to transfer the Giga Shadow’s consciousness into a newly developing insect organism, descended from the ancient species that once nearly eradicated humanity. The transfer succeeds, but the crew escapes the planet and destroys it using the Lexx. Despite this, the Giga Shadow’s influence endures, and during a period in which Kai is overtaken by its will, he directs the Lexx back toward the Light Universe, setting the stage for further conflict with His Shadow’s forces.
