Summary
Set in a future reshaped by catastrophic global warming, the series depicts a world in which rising seas have submerged most of the Earth, leaving modern Britain reduced to a chain of small islands. On Black Combe Island, part of what was once the Cumbrian Mountains, survivors Richard and Amy Webber establish a school dedicated to training a new generation of physicists capable of restoring the damaged planet.
Among their pupils are their children, Greg and Karen, and two gifted students, Ashok and Mai Li, who belong to a new breed of children possessing unusual mental abilities. Known as “senders,” they can transmit thoughts through their glowing eyes, and some exhibit further transformative powers, including the ability to assume the forms of animals or objects. Mai Li, however, struggles to control her abilities, posing a danger to those around her; the full extent of her powers remains uncertain.
The Webbers’ work is intended to support Greenwatch, a covert international organisation devoted to environmental recovery. Their mission is threatened when Kurt Glemser, the authoritarian leader of the Commission and himself a sender, launches a raid on the school and arrests Richard and Amy. The children are left to fend for themselves until assistance arrives from Goodman, a former scientist who has survived the flooding.
