Summary
In the year 2020, the Netherlands is depicted as a fully privatized and tightly regulated welfare state in which extensive governmental oversight has become routine. A significant proportion of the population lives in poverty, public spaces are saturated with surveillance systems, and the death penalty has recently been reinstated.
At the narrative’s centre is Quidam, a fifteen‑year‑old hacker who becomes the first individual sentenced to death under the newly established judicial framework. As preparations for his execution proceed, Quidam reflects on the circumstances of his brief life. Considered genetically unsuitable and regarded as someone who should not have been born, he gradually reconstructs the chain of events and institutional decisions that culminated in his capital sentence.
