Summary
The narrative follows Conner Hooks, an operative employed by Lifeline, a clandestine insurance corporation that markets specialised life‑insurance policies promising protection against all conceivable threats. Unbeknownst to the general public, Lifeline possesses a time‑travel device capable of transporting individuals only a short distance into the future. Each client is equipped with an advanced subdermal implant that signals whether death will occur within a thirty‑three‑day window. When such a warning is triggered, Lifeline dispatches agents like Conner into the near future to intervene and prevent the client’s demise.
During one assignment, Haley, Conner’s wife and fellow operative, is killed. In defiance of organisational protocol, Conner attempts to use the time‑travel technology to identify and pursue her murderer. His investigation gradually reveals that Lifeline’s director is operating under a concealed and conflicting agenda.
