Summary
Oceanic Airlines Flight 815 departs from Sydney bound for Los Angeles but never reaches its intended destination. After encountering extreme turbulence, the aircraft breaks apart and crashes on a remote tropical island in the Pacific Ocean. Only a portion of the passengers survive. When it becomes evident that no rescue is forthcoming, the survivors establish an improvised encampment along the shoreline.
The island soon proves to be an extraordinary and hazardous environment. Although initially presumed deserted, it is in fact host to numerous anomalies and concealed structures. Among the most striking discoveries are a series of subterranean and jungle‑embedded bunkers. These facilities are remnants of the Dharma Initiative, a scientific organisation that once conducted research on the island, though the nature and scope of its investigations are not immediately clear.
As the island’s mysteries accumulate, the survivors recognise that cooperation is essential for their continued existence. This proves challenging, as the group comprises individuals of diverse nationalities, backgrounds, and temperaments. Each possesses a complicated personal history, gradually revealed through flashback sequences that provide insight into their lives prior to the crash.
After 108 days, six survivors succeed in leaving the island, though their departure does not resolve their predicament. They eventually learn that circumstances compel them to return. From this point onward, the narrative incorporates flashforwards, depicting the future trajectories of key characters. The island itself is revealed to possess temporal properties, enabling movement through different historical periods, and the storyline follows the characters as they navigate these shifting timelines.
In later developments, the series introduces flash sideways, a narrative device presenting alternative realities that illustrate how the characters’ lives might have unfolded had pivotal events occurred differently. Throughout these evolving structures, both the characters and the audience are tasked with deciphering the island’s extensive network of enigmas.
