Summary
In 2025, Earth remains in the grip of a global infertility crisis, with no children born since 2019 and the first signs of widespread reproductive failure observed in 2016. Within the Department of Humanity (DOH), reproductive scientist Dr. Alison Lennon and her assistant Dr. James Lynch achieve a significant breakthrough, successfully fertilizing eggs and producing one hundred viable human embryos.
The development immediately becomes the focus of political and institutional conflict. Darius Hayes, Director of the DOH, argues that the embryos should be designated as government property. In contrast, President Thomas Westwood, facing declining public approval, accepts the advice of his chief of staff, Vanessa Keller, who proposes a national lottery to select one hundred women to carry the embryos to term.
Beyond the embryos themselves, the DOH seeks expanded authority over all remaining young children, including Elvis Walker, the six‑year‑old son of Kyle Walker. At the same time, an anti‑government organisation known as the Second of May Resistance, commonly referred to as the MayTwos, attempts to seize the embryos for its own ideological aims.
As Lennon and Lynch investigate the genetic backgrounds of the egg and sperm donors, they uncover a shared factor that reveals the underlying cause of the worldwide infertility pandemic. Their discovery places them at the centre of an escalating struggle over the future of humanity, where political ambition, secrecy, and competing agendas lead to fatal consequences for many of those involved.
