The series shared thematic similarities with the 1960s espionage drama Man From U.N.C.L.E., the; however, in this iteration the internationally based U.N.C.L.E. organisation was replaced by UNIT, an American‑run, top‑secret counter‑intelligence agency. The recurring antagonist shifted accordingly, with THRUSH supplanted by KARTEL.

UNIT operated behind a fabricated storefront and employed advanced technology in its operations. Sloan, the agency’s leading operative, was depicted as a spy in the James Bond mould. His field partner, Torque, was an imposing figure whose right hand had been amputated and replaced with a detachable metal prosthesis capable of accommodating a range of specialised gadgets. The agency’s director oversaw their missions, while Kelly, UNIT’s principal scientist, developed the devices utilised by Sloan and Torque. The organisation’s computational needs were managed by EFI 3000, UNIT’s central computer system.
