Summary
The final survivor of the lost civilisation of Atlantis first appeared in a cycle of four television films. Discovered half‑dead on a California beach in the aftermath of a storm, the amphibious stranger is taken to a naval hospital, where Dr Elizabeth Merrill, a young physician, saves his life by returning him to water after radiographs reveal functional gills in place of lungs. Dr Merrill names him Mark Harris and recruits him into the Foundation for Oceanic Research.
Working alongside Merrill and her colleagues aboard the advanced submarine Cetacean, Harris seeks to determine whether he is indeed the last surviving member of his species. The initial quartet of films combined character exploration with plots involving a missing submarine, extra-terrestrial incursions, spaceborne spores, and a deranged scientist. However, once the regular weekly series commenced, the Atlantean origin quest diminished, and the narrative shifted toward more conventional undersea adventure formats reminiscent of the later period of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, featuring eccentric villains, sea monsters, undersea civilisations, and time‑travel scenarios.
Victor Buono portrayed the principal antagonist, Mr Schubert, adopting the same tongue‑in‑cheek performance style he had previously employed as King Tut in Batman (1966). Other recurring characters included Brent, Schubert’s inept assistant, and C. W. Crawford, director of the Foundation for Oceanic Research.
