Summary

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. centres on two secret agents, Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, operatives of the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement (U.N.C.L.E.), an international organisation dedicated to countering threats to global stability. Solo, an American agent modelled in part on the James Bond archetype, is portrayed as a suave, resourceful operative who frequently emerges victorious in both professional and romantic pursuits. A veteran of the Korean War, he also holds a degree in philosophy. His partner, Kuryakin, is a Russian agent, an unusual choice for a heroic character during the height of the Cold War.

Although originally conceived as a minor supporting figure, Kuryakin quickly became a pop‑culture phenomenon, leading to the expansion of his role until it matched Solo’s in prominence. Many of the adversaries faced by the pair were affiliated with THRUSH, a global criminal organisation intent on world domination. Assignments were issued by Mr Alexander Waverly, the head of U.N.C.L.E., whose office was situated within the organisation’s concealed headquarters, accessible through a front‑facing dry‑cleaning establishment.
