Summary
Mann & Machine is a science‑fiction crime drama set in a near‑future Los Angeles where advances in robotics have enabled the introduction of experimental robot police officers. Although these units are designed to assist and eventually supplement human law‑enforcement personnel, they remain in a developmental phase and require field testing to identify behavioural and programming deficiencies. Detective Bobby Mann, a cynical and streetwise officer, is assigned to work with one such prototype. His initial robot partner, Warner, is destroyed in the line of duty, leading Mann to hope for reassignment to a human colleague. Instead, he is paired with Eve Edison, a highly advanced model constructed to resemble a human woman.
Eve Edison is a next‑generation unit developed under the Artificial Intelligence Project. She possesses a learning‑capable neural system intended to allow her to acquire human‑like behaviour through sustained interaction. Edison exhibits enhanced physical strength, an extensive internal knowledge database, and the ability to obtain additional information by accessing external mainframe systems. Despite her technical sophistication, she demonstrates social naïveté and difficulty integrating into human environments. Her assignment to Mann is deliberately structured to counterbalance her developmental limitations with his intuitive judgement and interpersonal experience. Although Mann initially resents being partnered with another robot, he gradually accepts Edison as a capable colleague and develops a genuine respect for her.
