Summary
Set in the year 2033, the series follows a crew of six astronauts who launch from Florida on a mission to become the first humans to land on Mars. During their descent through the Martian atmosphere, a malfunction occurs aboard their spacecraft, the Daedalus, forcing an unplanned landing 75.3 kilometres from their designated habitat site. Their progress and survival are monitored from Earth as mission control attempts to support the crew’s efforts to establish a foothold on the planet.
The second season advances the narrative several years into the future, after the Daedalus crew has constructed a functioning settlement known as Olympus Town. With humanity now established as an interplanetary species, the season explores the broader implications of human activity on Mars and the reciprocal effects of the Martian environment on its inhabitants.
Interwoven with the dramatized storyline is interview footage featuring both the fictional crew and real‑world contemporary figures. Scientists, engineers, and public commentators, including Elon Musk, Susan Wise Bauer, Andy Weir, Robert Zubrin, and Neil deGrasse Tyson, discuss the challenges associated with travelling to Mars and sustaining human life on the planet. These segments provide documentary context to the fictional events, highlighting the scientific, logistical, and psychological obstacles inherent in interplanetary exploration.
