Summary
The narrative concerns two children, Nicky and Judy, and their dog, Jokey, who become stranded on the remote isle of Rockall while sailing off the west coast of Scotland. On the island they encounter a secluded community dominated by a despotic 150‑year‑old ruler known as The Master, assisted by an enigmatic Chinese associate. The Master intends to extort global compliance by directing high‑powered destructive lasers at major cities.
Possessing an advanced intellect, The Master exerts telepathic control over others. Detecting similar abilities in Nicky, he attempts to cultivate the boy as his successor. Nicky, however, becomes aware of the scheme, and he and Judy, supported by Squadron Leader Frinton, resolve to prevent The Master’s plans. Their efforts are hindered by The Master’s ability to telepathically compel opponents to stand before his lasers, resulting in instantaneous vaporisation, a fate that befalls several characters, including eccentric scientist Dr McTurk.
The story incorporates a moral dilemma concerning the justification of killing for a greater good, as the children conclude that stopping The Master may require lethal action. In the final instalment, after The Master issues his ultimatum to the world, Nicky lures him to the summit of the island intending to shoot him. The ethical question is ultimately sidestepped when The Master slips, breaks his leg, and dies due to the fragility of his aged body. As Marines arrive on Rockall, the children and Frinton escape by helicopter moments before The Master’s fortress explodes.
