Summary
The narrative is set in 1975. Edward Borman, a civil servant employed in Pittsburgh, becomes unexpectedly confined within his office when a series of anomalous events occur. Luminescent, non‑corporeal entities manifest inside the building, later identified as originating from the planet Mercury. These hostile beings initiate a systematic takeover of the premises and attempt to kill every individual they encounter.
Responsibility for halting the extra-terrestrial incursion falls to Borman and engineer Jack Yaeger. Yaeger is subsequently revealed to be affiliated with a clandestine organisation known as The League, whose activities extend into covert defence operations. Together, the two men undertake efforts to prevent the alien threat from expanding beyond the building and endangering the wider world.
