Summary
Mercy Point is a science‑fiction television series set in the year 2249, centred on the medical personnel stationed aboard a deep‑space hospital facility. The narrative follows doctors and nurses assigned to a technologically advanced space‑borne institution described within the series as “the last stop for anything going out, the first stop for anything coming back”. Positioned on the fringes of the galaxy, the hospital serves the remote colony of Jericho and functions as a critical medical outpost for interstellar travellers.
The facility incorporates sophisticated medical technologies, including artificial wombs, holographic three‑dimensional diagnostic projections and zero‑gravity surgical tables. A sentient computer system named Hippocrates, voiced by series co‑creator Trey Callaway, acts as the primary interface for monitoring patient conditions and coordinating clinical information.
The medical staff, referred to in the series as med‑nauts, treat both human and extra-terrestrial patients, reflecting the diverse population of the surrounding frontier. Despite its futuristic setting, the production design notably retains contemporary 1990s fashion conventions in costuming and hairstyling.
The programme’s visual style and narrative structure also prompted comparisons to the contemporary medical drama ER, and promotional materials frequently characterised the series as ER in space.
