Summary
An impending asteroid impact prompts astronomer Dr. Lehman and his assistant Imogene O’Neill to race to deliver critical calculations to JPL scientist Dr. Chetwyn, Lehman’s former superior and the only official capable of authorising countermeasures. After Lehman is killed in an accident, Imogene continues the effort alone while evading violent criminals and navigating a series of crises. Concurrently, Detective Jack Crowe searches for his unstable former partner Stark, who seeks revenge by targeting Crowe’s family, while Crowe’s father, the town sheriff, attempts to maintain order during escalating meteor activity. A parallel storyline follows a family struggling to survive inside a hospital struck by falling debris.
The United States launches nuclear weapons at the asteroid, designated 114 Kassandra, but Imogene discovers a flaw in Lehman’s algorithm: the object had been split into two fragments, and only the smaller half was destroyed. With the remaining military arsenal depleted, the larger fragment continues toward Earth, generating increasingly destructive meteor storms. A strike on the monitoring headquarters kills Dr. Chetwyn, leaving Imogene as the sole person capable of correcting the trajectory calculations.
After escaping an abduction by Stark and re‑establishing contact with surviving scientists via a remote radio tower, Imogene transmits revised guidance moments before the government launches its final missiles. Although the strike initially appears to have failed, the altered course successfully diverts Kassandra into the Sun, preventing global catastrophe.
