Summary
Wendy Watson, a struggling young artist, is recruited by a covert organisation after demonstrating exceptional composure under pressure and a photographic memory. She becomes the apprentice of the Middleman, a freelance operative who specialises in resolving exotic problems, typically involving mad scientists, anomalous threats, and other extraordinary crises. Assisted by the irritable robot Ida, Wendy is introduced to a world of unconventional adversaries and pop‑culture‑inflected missions. The pilot centres on a super‑intelligent ape whose escape leads to a series of Mafia killings and repeated quotations from American crime films, ultimately revealing the creature as a pawn of a larger antagonist.
Wendy shares an illegal sublet with her activist friend Lacey, who frequently refers to her as Dub‑Dub, while the Middleman adopts the nickname Dubby, both derived from Wendy’s initial. Additional recurring figures include Noser, known for his musical non sequiturs, and Wendy’s problematic former boyfriend Ben. The series incorporates numerous comic‑book and genre references, including Wendy’s self‑description as Robin the Boy Hostage, reflecting its stylistic blend of humour, adventure, and metafictional commentary.
