Summary
A sudden and unexplained blackout renders all residents of the English village of Midwich unconscious for twenty‑four hours, an event later termed the dayout. When the villagers awaken, every woman of child‑bearing age is found to be pregnant. The children are born simultaneously, develop at an accelerated rate, and display a physical resemblance to their mothers while collectively exhibiting both sexes. The government, under the direction of Bernard Westcott, provides financial support to the families and oversees the children’s education and monitoring at a local facility known as The Grange. Dr. Zellaby, a villager uninvolved in the pregnancies, becomes part of the staff and suspects the children are of extra-terrestrial origin, sharing her concerns with DCI Haynes, the police liaison for Midwich.
As the years pass, the rapidly maturing children grow increasingly detached from the villagers, with the exception of one child, Nathan. They develop telekinetic abilities and use them to compel their parents’ actions, resulting in self‑harm and, in two cases, death. Westcott eventually reveals himself to be an adult survivor of a similar event in a Russian village three decades earlier, where authorities destroyed the settlement out of fear of the developing children. Under his guidance, the Midwich children seize control of a nearby military base and arrange their departure from the village. They erase themselves from the villagers’ memories, though Nathan warns his parents, Zellaby, and Haynes, who take shelter underground and remain unaffected. The children remove Nathan from their collective consciousness, allowing him and Cassie to escape, before departing by bus with Zellaby as a voluntary hostage to ensure safe passage.
Unbeknownst to the children, Haynes has infiltrated the military escort and planted an explosive device on the bus. Although he urges Zellaby to flee, she refuses, fearing that her absence would alert the children. Haynes reluctantly detonates the device, killing Zellaby and the children, while Westcott—travelling in a support vehicle—survives. Nathan and Cassie witness the explosion from the woods before departing the area.
