Summary
The story is set in the year 2063, at a time when the melting of the polar ice caps and a succession of catastrophic natural disasters have resulted in the near‑total inundation of the Earth’s surface. Most landmasses have disappeared beneath rising seas, although the territory of the Netherlands has, for the moment, remained largely intact.
In response to the global crisis, seven Dutch astronauts embark on an interstellar mission aboard the spacecraft Tasman. Their objective is singular: to locate a habitable planet capable of serving as a new home for humanity before Earth becomes completely submerged.
While the remaining survivors on Earth await encouraging news from the expedition, the crew of the Tasman contends with the monotony of long‑duration space travel. Their daily routines are frequently disrupted by trivial disputes and personal eccentricities, reflecting the interpersonal challenges typical of any confined working environment. The astronauts must navigate one another’s idiosyncrasies, limitations, and irritations as they continue their search for a viable refuge for the human species.
