Summary
In the near future, the first crewed mission to Mars, Ulysses 1, is launched as a European venture jointly funded by the European Space Agency and Swiss billionaire philanthropist William Meyer. Its crew consists of leading European astronauts and scientists, including representatives from France, Italy and Germany. Among them is Jeanne Renoir, the mission psychologist responsible for monitoring the mental well‑being of the team during their ten‑month journey.
Shortly before landing, the crew receives unexpected communication from Meyer informing them that they will not be the first humans to reach Mars. A United States mission, travelling aboard a more advanced vessel funded by NASA and a multinational computer corporation, has already arrived. The only evidence of the American team’s presence is a disturbing video message warning the Europeans not to land, declaring the planet “too dangerous”.
Determined to uncover the truth, the Ulysses 1 crew proceeds with its descent. Upon arrival, they find no trace of the American astronauts. Instead, they encounter Vladimir Komarov, the Soviet cosmonaut who historically died during the 1967 Soyuz 1 mission. His inexplicable presence on Mars forms the central mystery confronting the European team.
