Summary
A dense and unexplained mist gradually descends upon the town of Bridgeville, Maine, forming a near‑total obstruction to visibility. As conditions worsen, residents discover that the phenomenon is accompanied by hazardous anomalies within the mist, which attack and kill most individuals who attempt to enter it. The event results in several groups of townspeople becoming isolated in key locations, including a shopping mall, a church, and a hospital.
Over time, the mist begins to manifest apparitions drawn from the memories, fears, and unresolved guilt of those trapped. These manifestations vary in behaviour, either assisting or harming individuals according to their emotional responses and psychological state.
