Summary
Newlywed John Brent becomes intrigued by longstanding local legends while staying at a small hotel in northern England situated beside a lake reputed for centuries to harbour mysterious creatures. His curiosity intensifies when the body of Charles Pulford, a government agent, is discovered floating in the water. Brent begins to suspect a connection between Pulford’s death and the region’s folklore.
His investigation leads him to the enigmatic Professor Cato, whose activities involve the use of miniature submarines operated for covert purposes. Brent ultimately uncovers evidence that the lake’s legendary creatures are real and that their continued existence holds significant implications for the future of humanity.
