Summary
In 2003, humanity maintains a fragile presence on the Moon, where men and women live within compact, pressurised settlements established by competing geopolitical blocs. These lunar outposts represent only a tentative foothold in an inhospitable environment, sustained by limited funding and the diminishing goodwill of Earth‑based governments. Life on the Moon is arduous; psychological pressures are as prevalent and consequential as the technical challenges inherent in sustaining extra-terrestrial habitation.
The narrative centres on a broad ensemble of regular and recurring personnel. Prominent among them are David Caulder, scientific trouble-shooter and newly appointed director of the European lunar base; his deputy, Michel Lebrun; technical director Tom Hill; and the base’s psychiatrist, Dr. Helen Smith.
