Summary
The series centres on Martin, an extra-terrestrial from the planet Mars, whose true identity is known only to Tim O’Hara, a reporter for a Los Angeles newspaper. While travelling to cover a story, Tim witnesses a spacecraft making an emergency landing in the desert. Investigating the crash, he encounters Martin, who openly identifies himself as a Martian but insists he will deny the claim should Tim attempt to publish it. In lieu of the lost journalistic opportunity, Tim agrees to introduce Martin as his eccentric uncle and allows him to reside with him while repairs to the damaged spacecraft are undertaken.
Maintaining Martin’s secret proves challenging, particularly in the presence of Tim’s landlady, Mrs. Brown, an attractive widow who lives downstairs with her teenage daughter, Angela. In addition to concealing a spacecraft in the garage, Martin possesses numerous abilities unknown to humans. He can render himself invisible, communicate with animals, read minds, levitate objects, and extend retractable antennae from his head. Various other powers and peculiar allergies to Earth materials appear episodically, typically creating complications that are resolved within a single instalment and not referenced again.
Martin’s spacecraft contains an array of advanced Martian devices, many of which malfunction or are misused by Tim, resulting in further difficulties requiring elaborate explanations. Among these inventions is a time machine, introduced late in the second season and used frequently during the third, enabling Martin and Tim to encounter both notable and obscure historical figures.
The second season also introduces Detective Bill Brennan, who becomes Mrs. Brown’s romantic interest. His presence provokes jealousy in Martin, who harbours feelings for her, and Brennan’s growing suspicion of Martin’s unusual behaviour forces both Martin and Tim to exercise increased caution in his vicinity.
