Summary
The narrative follows a young girl who forms an unlikely friendship with her ancestor, Sir Walter Raleigh, through a series of time‑travel encounters. In the past, Vicky faces the prospect of being auctioned by the Throckmorton family, agricultural tenants confronting severe financial hardship. Charlie Throckmorton (James Hazeldine), a well‑meaning but overwhelmed farmer, struggles to manage the situation, while his wife Joan (Louise Jameson) has recently given birth to another child. Their circumstances are further complicated by the presence of their unpleasant neighbours, the Borrowbills (Don Henderson and Richard Strange), leaving the eccentric Aunt Ellie (Prunella Scales) as the only remaining refuge.
The family receives unexpected assistance from the ghost of Sir Walter Raleigh (Ronald Pickup), who selects their ten‑year‑old daughter, Bess (Poly Grant), to help clear his name of the treason charges that led to his execution. In return, Raleigh pledges to support the beleaguered household. His intervention, however, proves to be a mixed blessing: driven by an unwavering commitment to justice, Raleigh frequently acts without regard for the disruption his efforts may cause.
