Summary
While on holiday in the United States, British nurse Janet Dawkins accidentally falls into the Grand Canyon and is rescued by Thermoman, a red‑liveried superhero originating from the planet Ultron. Thermoman is internationally renowned for his extraordinary abilities and is widely regarded as an irresistible figure, particularly among women. Uncharacteristically, the Ultronian behind the heroic persona develops an immediate romantic attachment to Janet. His civilian identity is George Sunday, an Irish proprietor of a health‑food shop, and it is in this guise that he later seeks out Janet in her home district of Northolt in west London. Although George initially attempts to court her without revealing his dual identity, he soon discloses his superhero nature. Janet expresses reservations about the practicality of such a relationship but ultimately agrees to pursue it.
Despite his superhuman powers, George possesses limited understanding of human customs and displays an eccentric, often misguided interpretation of everyday life. This contributes to the disapproval of Janet’s domineering mother and her long‑suffering father, Stanley, who favour Janet’s employer, the self‑absorbed Doctor Crispin, a minor celebrity due to his role as host of a medical television programme. George also encounters scepticism from Mrs Raven, the acerbic receptionist at the Northolt Health Centre where Janet works. In contrast, he gains support from Janet’s neighbour Tyler, whose perceptions remain affected by extensive drug experimentation during the 1960s. Tyler is aware of George’s true identity as Thermoman, but his reputation for unreliable statements ensures that this knowledge poses no threat. George also confides in his Uncle Arnie, an Ultronian expatriate who operates a diner in Brooklyn.
In the second series, Janet becomes pregnant, prompting George to endow her with Ultronian powers to safeguard the unborn child. Ultronian gestation lasts only six days, compelling the couple to hastily arrange their marriage before the birth. Immediately following the ceremony, Janet undergoes an accelerated labour and delivers their son, Ollie, whose remarkable abilities form a central narrative element of the third series. During this period, Arnie enters into a combative yet overtly sexual relationship with Mrs Raven, a dynamic that continues with similar intensity throughout the fourth series.
