Summary
My Life and Times was a television series set in a retirement home in the year 2035. From this future vantage point, the central character, Ben Miller, reflects upon the formative events of his earlier life. The programme employed a retrospective narrative device comparable to that used in the more widely known series The Wonder Years, in which characters recount experiences from their youth. However, whereas The Wonder Years examined the past through the perspective of the present, My Life and Times presented contemporary life and the near future as remembered from a more distant point in time.
Within the series, Ben is depicted as having studied journalism at Northwestern University. Throughout his adult life he attempts to establish himself as a journalist and writer, although financial necessity frequently compels him to undertake alternative forms of employment. The narrative is not arranged chronologically; instead, episodes shift between various periods of Ben’s life, ranging from his university years in the late 1960s, during which he meets his future wife, Rebecca, to the late 1990s, when Rebecca’s death from cancer marks a significant turning point in his personal history.
