Summary
The narrative follows Melanie Barker, Josh Barker and Lucy Barker, three siblings who, eight years after the death of their parents in a car accident, have experienced a succession of foster placements, occasionally together but more often separated. Their collective adoption prospects are considered minimal, owing both to the difficulty of placing three children simultaneously and to the siblings’ reputation for being particularly challenging to care for.
An unexpected opportunity arises when Brian Johnson and Sophie Johnson, a seemingly affluent and compassionate couple, apply to adopt the children. Although Social Services regard the Johnsons as ideal candidates, the couple are, in fact, Veluxian metamorphs who have crash‑landed on Earth and constructed a suburban identity while awaiting retrieval from their home planet. Their rescue vessel, however, is not expected to arrive for at least forty years, compelling them to assimilate into human society for the foreseeable future.
Observing that families in their neighbourhood typically include children, the Johnsons decide to adopt the Barker siblings as part of their cover. The arrangement initially appears harmonious, though it requires all parties to adapt to domestic conventions that are, for the Veluxians, profoundly unfamiliar. The children soon discover that their foster parents’ alien perspectives lead to unconventional interpretations of human norms, for example, believing that academic grades equate A with Awful and F with Fantastic, and regarding the consumption of an entire chocolate cake as a severe disciplinary measure. The central challenge for the family becomes maintaining their façade while preventing authorities from uncovering the Johnsons’ extra-terrestrial origins.
