Summary
The series centres on Andrew Clements, an ordinary teenage comic‑book enthusiast who acquires superhuman abilities after accidental exposure to gamma radiation in the laboratory of his neighbour, Dr. Benjamin Jeffcoate. Jeffcoate, a somewhat irascible and frequently ineffectual scientist, is known for inventions of varying reliability, including both partially successful experiments and conspicuous failures such as a malfunctioning super‑glue spray. Although initially wary of Andrew, Jeffcoate develops a close, quasi‑paternal relationship with him following the accident.
The radiation incident grants Andrew super‑speed, invulnerability and limited levitation. He initially learns to manoeuvre through the air by using aerosol cans as propulsion while floating. Over time, he acquires additional abilities, including genuine flight and superhuman strength. Inspired by the comic‑book heroes he admires, Andrew adopts the persona of Ultraman (not related to the Japanese TV francize Ultraman) and attempts to use his powers for benevolent purposes. Jeffcoate strongly disapproves of this vigilante activity and remains committed to finding a way to restore Andrew to normal.
The adversaries Andrew encounters are generally mundane rather than world‑threatening, often consisting of school rivals or minor local troublemakers. He conceals his abilities from everyone except Jeffcoate and, later, his best friend Kirk. His widowed mother, Stephanie Clements, and his sister Erin remain unaware of his transformation. Over the course of the series, a subtle romantic rapport begins to develop between Jeffcoate and Stephanie. Andrew also has a younger brother who appears in the pilot episode but is neither referenced nor seen again.
