Summary
A diverse gallery of extravagant characters operates within a series of detective, fantastical, scientific, and frequently implausible intrigues set beneath the skies of Xampana, a fictional banana republic in South America.
At the centre of this fiction are the Kramm brothers and their clandestine organisation, the Red Hand. Cornelius Kramm (Gérard Desarthe), a brilliant yet entirely amoral scientist, is supported by his brother Fritz (Jean Bouise) in a scheme to achieve global domination. Their plans rely upon the manipulation of Barruch Jorgell (Hugues Quester), a compulsive gambler implicated in criminal activity and disowned by his father, the immensely wealthy self‑made industrialist Fred Jorgell (Georges Géret).
To exploit Barruch for their purposes, the Kramm brothers provide him with a fabricated identity: Joe Dorgan (Maurice Vaudaux), the son of a family renowned for its success in oil prospecting. Through intricate cosmetic surgery, Barruch is transformed into Dorgan’s double. To avoid killing the real Joe Dorgan, the brothers instead alter his appearance to resemble Barruch. His memories are subsequently erased, leaving him capable of uttering only a single sentence: My name is Baruch Jorgell. Arrested and unable to explain his condition, the altered Dorgan is confined to a psychiatric institution. Isadora Jorgell (Caroline Sihol), however, begins to doubt the official account of the inmate’s identity.
