Summary

During the siege of Richmond, Virginia, in the American Civil War, Captain Cyrus Harding, a Union prisoner of war, escapes his Confederate captors by commandeering an observation balloon. Accompanying him on this improvised flight are the sailor Pencroft, Pencroft’s nephew Bert, the writer Gideon, the loyal soldier Neb, and a dog. A powerful hurricane drives the balloon far off course, ultimately depositing the group on a remote, volcanic, cliff‑bound island in the South Pacific. Uncharted and inhabited by unusual peoples, the island is christened Lincoln Island in honour of President Abraham Lincoln.

The castaways soon encounter a diverse array of inhabitants, including local natives who venerate the island’s volcano, the extra-terrestrial Rulu, an emissary from Mercury seeking to extract a super‑explosive element to facilitate planetary conquest, Ayrton, a wild man exiled to the island, and Captain Shard, a ruthless pirate. A mysterious figure possessing extraordinary scientific abilities also reveals himself: Captain Nemo, who survived the whirlpool at the conclusion of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and, unlike his counterpart in the Disney adaptation, was not fatally wounded by naval forces.

As they struggle to survive, Harding and his companions confront natural hazards, hostile factions, and the island’s many enigmas while attempting to devise a means of escape and return to civilization.
