Summary
The series follows Mike Nelson, an ordinary man employed as a temporary worker who is launched into space aboard the Satellite of Love after replacing janitor Joel Robinson, the station’s original test subject, who eventually escapes back to Earth. Mike is dispatched into orbit by his malevolent employers in Deep 13, who conduct an ongoing experiment by compelling him to watch poorly made films and monitoring his psychological responses. To maintain his morale and sanity, Mike provides continuous commentary on the films, assisted by three robots, Gypsy, Tom Servo, and Crow, constructed from components of the satellite.
The programme presents the films from the perspective of the theatre seats occupied by Mike and the robots, whose silhouettes appear along the lower edge of the screen. Their remarks draw extensively on American popular culture, as well as references to science, philosophy, history, and current affairs. At intervals during each film, Mike and the robots are granted brief reprieves in the form of host segments, during which they perform comedic sketches designed to irritate the supervising scientists, led by Dr. Clayton Forrester.
