Summary
Set in London in 1899, the narrative centres on Amalia True, a widowed woman who oversees St. Romaulda’s Orphanage, an institution that serves as a refuge for individuals exhibiting unusual abilities collectively known as the Touched. True, accompanied by Penance Adair, undertakes the retrieval of Myrtle Haplisch, a young Touched girl whose speech manifests as involuntary fragments of multiple languages, after she is abducted by a group of unidentified assailants.
Concurrently, Lord Massen and a cohort of government officials convene to assess the emergence of the Touched and the implications their existence may hold for the stability of the British Empire. Elsewhere, Augie Bidlow visits his associate Hugo Swann and requests his attendance at an opera performance. At the orphanage, True receives a formal invitation to the same event from Lavinia Bidlow, the institution’s patron.
During their journey to the opera, True and Adair are confronted by the Beggar King, who expresses displeasure at True’s earlier insistence on arranging a meeting with him. Upon arrival at the opera house, the performance is violently interrupted by Maladie, a serial killer associated with the Touched, who abducts Mary Brighton, a woman whose singing exerts a calming influence on others of her kind. True pursues Maladie but is unable to secure Brighton’s release.
Following the incident, Inspector Frank Mundi initiates an official investigation into the attack. In a separate sequence, Doctor Hague is depicted subjecting a Touched individual to invasive medical experimentation. A flashback to 1896 reveals that Maladie alone retains memory of a vast airborne phenomenon that precipitated the emergence of the Touched.
